Terminology

This page will explain terminology, abbreviations, and file types that you may not be familiar with.

Accessory: An object attached to a character for cosmetic purposes. These include hats, necklaces, glasses, earrings, rings and the like.

Affect Pivot Only: A 3DStudio Max function that lets one adjust the pivot of an object without moving, rotating or scaling the object.

Alpha Channel: A grayscale image associated with a texture. It is used for certain special effects, most notably masking transparencies.

Anti-Aliasing: A process in which jagged edges of polygons are smoothed on display.

BMP: An image file type commonly used by Playboy: The Mansion. In the case of Playboy: The Mansion, BMPs are usually 256 colors (8-bit).

Body Mesh: A particular type of character mesh used in Playboy: The Mansion.

Camera: Usually indicates the player's point-of-view in the Photoshoot mode.

Casual Mesh: A particular type of character mesh used in Playboy: The Mansion.

Celebrity: A character category in Playboy: The Mansion. Characters renowned for their skill/popularity in a particular field.

Centerfold: The signature pictorial of Playboy magazine. One of the pieces of magazine content needed to publish a magazine.

Charm: A character skill that defines the relative charisma of a character.

Color Palette: The range of 256 colors in an 8-bit texture.

Cover Shot: One of the pieces of magazine content needed to publish a magazine.

Curvy Mesh: A particular type of character mesh used in Playboy: The Mansion, unique to the Photoshoot mode.

Curvy Natural Mesh: A particular type of character mesh used in Playboy: The Mansion, unique to the Photoshoot mode.

Decorative Objects/Paintings: Items whose sole function is to beautify/increase room value.

Demographic Screen: A game screen in Playboy: The Mansion that gives the user the breakdown of readership.

Drives: Dynamic values that influence how characters behave in Playboy: The Mansion.

Dynamic Color Change: The functionality in Playboy: The Mansion that enables the player to adjust the color of hair and clothing.

Engine ID Tag: An alpha numeric sequence used by the Playboy: The Mansion engine to ID and utilize certain files.

Essay: One of the pieces of magazine content needed to publish a magazine.

Fame: The measure of how famous/popular a character is.

Gamebryo: A 3D pipeline developed by NDL, and used by Cyberlore Studios to create Playboy: The Mansion. This is also an adjective used to describe certain shader types and file types created by NDL for Gamebryo.

Goal: A mission specific objective in Playboy: The Mansion.

Hef: Nickname of Hugh M. Hefner, founder and publisher of Playboy Magazine; your avatar in Playboy: The Mansion.

Hef Screen: An interface in Playboy: The Mansion that allows the player to view and edit stats related to their avatar, Hugh Hefner.

Hue, Saturation and Brightness (also called Hue, Saturation and Blackness): Three values used to define color. Hue represents the range of color in the visible spectrum. Saturation represents the percentage of color from gray to pure color. Brightness (Blackness) represents the value of the color from pure black to pure color.

Intellect: A character skill that defines their relative intelligence.

Items: The object that may be purchased and placed within your mansion.

Jacket Mesh: A particular type of character mesh used in Playboy: The Mansion, unique to Hef.

Journalist: One of the character types that can be hired in Playboy: The Mansion

Key Color: A color, or range of colors, in a 256 color texture, used to define transparency. Commonly used in clothing textures.

LOD: Level of Detail. In the case of models, this refers to multiple variations of the same object with a range of polygon counts. In the case of textures, this refers to the size of the texture appropriate to the use, and the processing power of the end user's machine.

Magazine Content: In Playboy: The Mansion there are a number of features (Pictorial, Centerfold, Interview...) that must be completed before a magazine can go to print. This is the Magazine Content.

Mansion: In Playboy: The Mansion, this specifically refers to your (Hef's) estate.

Mesh: Another term for 3D Model. Usually used to imply "character model."

Mini Mesh: A particular type of character mesh used in Playboy: The Mansion, unique to female characters.

Mood: A measure of how happy a character is. The higher the mood, the happier the character.

NIF: The file extension used by Gamebryo.

Party: A social event in Playboy: The Mansion. One of the cornerstones of gameplay.

Photographer: One of the character types that can be hired in Playboy: The Mansion.

Photoshoot: Part of the gameplay of Playboy: The Mansion, in which the player photographs a high-polygon version of a particular character.

Photoshoot Texture: A high resolution texture used specifically for the photoshoot mode of Playboy: The Mansion

Photoshop: A 2D graphics program developed by Adobe and used by Cyberlore Studios in the making of Playboy: The Mansion.

Physique: A character skill that defines the relative quality of their physicality.

Pivot: The point around which an object rotates in 3D space.

Pixel: A point of color on a monitor. The building blocks of computer art.

Playmate: One of the character types that can be hired in Playboy: The Mansion.

Polygon: A 3D surface defined by 3 or 4 points in space (called Vertices).

Promotion: A 2D graphics program developed by Cosmigo. Used by Cyberlore Studios to manipulate 8-bit textures.

Room Value: A value defined by the items within a room. The higher the room value, the happier characters will be, therein.

Skills: Character variable that define how well they perform certain tasks/activities.

Skirt Mesh: A particular type of character mesh used in Playboy: The Mansion, unique to female characters.

Targa: An image file type commonly used by Playboy: The Mansion. Targas can be 16, 24 or 32 bits. 24 bits is the most common, and most applicable for use in Playboy: The Mansion.

Template: An image map that shows how a particular character mesh is unfolded and mapped in two dimensions.

Texture: A image map applied to a model giving it color and detail. In Playboy: The Mansion, objects are built out of two primary components: a mesh and a texture.

3DStudio Max: A 3D modeling and animation program developed by Discreet, used by Cyberlore Studios to create Playboy: The Mansion.

Tight Mesh: A particular type of character mesh used in Playboy: The Mansion.

Urban Mesh: A particular type of character mesh used in Playboy: The Mansion, unique to male characters.

UVW Map: The means in which a texture is applied to a model in 3DStudio Max.

UVW Unwrap: A 3DStudio Max modifier that takes the mapping of an object and flattens it into two dimensions.

Vertex (plural Vertices): A point in 3D space defined by three values (distance on the x-axis, y-axis and z-axis)

V.I.P. Mesh: A particular type of character mesh used in Playboy: The Mansion, unique to female characters.

Wardrobe Editor: Playboy: The Mansion allows the user to edit the clothing of characters in what is called "the wardrobe editor."

XML: Extensible Markup Language. A file type used by Playboy: The Mansion.
