Here are some tips and advanced
technique ideas for users that are more familiar with Photoshop:
- It can be very difficult to get bikini straps, belts, etc... to align properly.
Try laying out your texture with basic colors and previewing it in
the game before you add a lot of detail. It may take several revisions.
This is much faster and easier than trying to adjust a more finalized
texture.
- Try creating your texture in RGB mode using colors selected from
one of the custom palettes. Once you are finished you can convert
the image into index color (8-bit) mode and load that same custom
palette into the image. Photoshop will force all of the colors into
the palette. The results are usually very good and it allows you to
use all of the tools such as smooth edged brushes, anti-aliased selections,
and the smoothing/smearing tool. The conversion works best when you
keep any transitions to the transparent color as crisp and hard edged
as possible.
- All of the textures for Playboy: The Mansion were created at 1024x512
pixels and then re-sized to the various game textures. This technique
allows you to work a little looser and still pack in a lot of details.
- Try making your own palettes. You can create and edit palettes in
Photoshop, but it is tedious. Cyberlore used a program called Pro
Motion, by Cosmigo, to create and modify texture palettes. You can
get an inexpensive "lite" version from the Pro
Motion Home Page
