OK, it's time to make a texture. This tutorial will describe two basic ways to make a clothing texture for Playboy: The Mansion. Here are some basic guidelines you should keep in mind...
  • First things first. You need to decide what clothing style you want to make before you start the texture. Each style uses a different mesh and is mapped in slightly different ways.
  • Most textures only need to be created in the middle size format (256x128 pixels).
  • Make sure to create photoshoot textures at the largest size. You can always scale them down later for use as regular game textures.

Process 1: The easiest way to create a clothing texture is to manipulate an existing texture from the Playboy/Textures directory.
  1. Open your favorite graphics program (Cyberlore used Adobe Photoshop 7 to create the basic textures for the game)
  2. Load an existing texture from the Playboy textures folder. Don't forget that you can tell what mesh style the texture uses by referring to the naming chart on page 2 of this tutorial.
  3. Save the texture back into the same folder, but with a new name. You should remove the engine ID tag at the beginning and change the name tag at the end to whatever you like.
  4. It is now safe to select colors from within the texture and paint whatever you wish.
  5. Be sure to save the image when you are done editing it.
  6. Start a new game of Playboy: The Mansion and your texture will automatically be built into the game.
  7. The texture may be randomly applied to a character in a game, but it's hard to predict since it is random after all. If you have unlocked the wardrobe editor then you can use it to select your texture and apply it to a character.

Here is an example of how the female textures are laid out and applied to the mesh.
Process 2: This process will allow you to use the templates and custom palettes that are provided in the resources folder of this tutorial.
  1. Decide what type of clothing texture you want to make. Don't forget that male and female textures each have different meshes. You can always consult page two of this tutorial for reference.
  2. Load the template file that matches the clothing style you are creating. The templates are located in the Samples/Templates folder of this tutorial.
  3. The next step, and probably the most important, is to pick a palette to use. Twenty two unique palettes have been provided for you in the Samples/Palettes folder. Preview jpeg files have been created to show you exactly what colors are in each palette.
  4. Load the palette into the template file- this will probably cause the template colors to change.
  5. Corresponding ACO files have been provided so you can load the palettes into your swatches window and easily select the colors while drawing.
  6. Save the template into the Playboy textures folder with a new name. Be sure the name complies with the naming convention explained on page 2 of this tutorial.
  7. Draw over the template to create your custom texture. It may help to open some preexisting textures from the Playboy textures folder as reference.
  8. Save your changes.
  9. Start a new game of Playboy: The Mansion and your texture will automatically be built into the game.
  10. The texture may be randomly applied to a character in a game, but it's hard to predict since it is random after all. If you have unlocked the wardrobe editor then you can use it to select your texture and apply it to a character.
